On the Water has thrived as a mainstay of the local and national DIY arts community, evolving through several permutations with Fletcher VanVliet remaining at the group’s center. Their newest EP "Superposition" continues the thread of their previous works by drawing on the ramshackle approach and lyrical candor of the American folk tradition; yet it also signals a marked evolution in style and substance. While still rooted in the familiar, the album reaches increasingly toward the avant-garde by fusing an off-kilter chamber folk with heavy progressive arrangements.
